Spotlight ~ Glen King
Glen King grew up on a farm west
of Monticello in Castle Grove Township with three brothers and one
sister. He attended country school until the 8th
grade and then attended Monticello High School, graduating in 1951.
After graduation, Glen did farm work for a few years until Uncle Sam
drafted him into the United States Army in 1956. He completed basic
training in Springfield, Missouri and was then sent to Germany for two
years. While in Germany, Glen drove the heavy artillery trucks and
specialized in truck maintenance.
Upon completing his time with
the service, Glen returned to Jones County and started working on area
farms. Glen was set up on a blind date with a gal from Williamsburg,
and it was love at first site. Glen asked Shirley to be his wife and
they were married in 1960. Glen started working at the Chevy/Olds
Garage in Monticello and in 1963 he and Shirley moved to town. Along
came children, two daughters to be exact. In 1979 Glen started working
for Cuckler's in Monticello as a machinist in the tool and die
department. Twenty-two years later, Glen retired in 2001.
Glen has been an active member
of the Monticello First Presbyterian Church serving as an Elder, Deacon,
and member of the Buildings and Ground Committee. Through church, Glen
first heard of Camp Wyoming when his daughter, Christine, wanted to
attend summer camp. Glen became reacquainted with Camp Wyoming in 1999
when he responded to an announcement in the church bulletin. Camp
Wyoming was looking for volunteers to help construct two tree-houses.
Glen loaded up his tools, drove to the Camp and we’ve enjoyed his
smiling face ever since. Throughout the years, Glen has helped us with
many projects such as the Owl’s Nest refurbishment, remodeling of the
lodge bathrooms, and replacing doors and windows at the Tree Unit
cabins.
When at home in Monticello, Glen
enjoys putzing around with wood work, church maintenance projects, and
completing tasks on his “honey do” list. Glen also helps out with
delivery of meals through the Senior Dining program in Monticello. One
of Glen and Shirley’s favorite things to do is follow their
grandchildren through school activities. Most recently, one of their
granddaughters performed in San Diego, California during the Holiday
Bowl half-time dance show. The King’s have three grandchildren, two
living in Springville and one in Missouri. Glen & Shirley keep in close
cahoots with their family in Missouri via email…that is when Glen can
keep his computer running. Glen and Shirley also enjoy retirement by
pulling their camper to various hideouts throughout Iowa, Illinois and
Wisconsin. One of their favorite hang-outs is the Old Thresher’s
Reunion in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. The King’s meet up with members of their
Camper Club and enjoy each others company.
Glen enjoys seeing the
Monticello Presbyterian youth active in Camp Wyoming programs. Each
summer the church financially sponsors as many children as possible who
want to experience camp life. It’s because the church is made up
of many individuals such as Glen King, who enable the ministry to
continue.
~ Thank you
Glen for spending your time as a Camp Wyoming Volunteer ~
