Rev. Heather Hayes serves as
the Associate Pastor
for the First Presbyterian Church near Ely, Iowa. She has been
married to Dave Hayes, a professor at Coe College, for 10 years. Dave is
a Coe College Professor. They have three daughters, Mackenzie,
Johanna, and Allison.
Heather likes to garden, read, knit, run, and engage in most outdoor
activities. She also enjoys “whatever her kids are doing.” Heather’s
favorite food is anything from the Lincoln Café. Some of her favorite
movies are “Chariots of Fire” and the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, but
she enjoys any movie whose ending is not immediately apparent. Heather
graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in Religion and later
graduated from the McCormick Theological Seminary. Her mother, Karen
Carver, recently retired as the Christian Education Director at
Westminster Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Her father, John,
was an engineer for Rockwell Collins. Heather has two younger siblings,
Becky and Matt. Becky served as a counselor for Camp Wyoming in the
1990s.
Heather remembers coming to Camp Wyoming as a child for family camp
events and youth retreat gatherings. She has recently attended Pastoral
Leadership Retreats at Camp and enjoys the opportunity to be in a
peaceful setting to spiritually connect with other Pastors. Heather
finds Camp and Retreat ministry “an important piece in our faith
development. As a society, we can easily become detached from the
outdoors which prevents our children from experiencing an environment to
run loose and free. Camp helps provide that sacred experience. Plus, the
pace of life is so fast and busy that as Christians we need a place of
respite to reconnect with God and others. We may not be aware of how
much our bodies and spirit needs this break. Camp helps rekindle that
relationship.”
