Volunteer ~ Ken McMurray
Ken
McMurray and his wife of 49 years, Jan, have experienced a whole lot of
Camp Wyoming throughout their married life. They first heard of
Camp Wyoming from friends in the Marion Presbyterian church. While the
McMurray’s children, Bruce, Kirk & Lisa, were growing up, Ken & Jan
joined with several families from church and gathered at Camp Wyoming
each New Year’s Eve. The McMurray’s have four grandchildren. Ken and
Jan have both served on the Camp Wyoming Board of Directors. Jan has
actively volunteered during the summer programs, while Ken has
volunteered his time towards many maintenance projects throughout the
Camp Wyoming property.
Ken says
life began for he and Jan when they both retired. Jan a retired
Kindergarten teacher and Ken a retired investment broker, have spent
their retirement years combining traveling with volunteering.
Summer
months can find Ken & Jan just about anywhere. By reading the Lewis &
Clark series their interest peaked, leading them to spend one summer on
the Pacific Coast volunteering at the Lewis & Clark Visitors Center.
When not providing information to the center tourists, Ken and Jan
became their own tourists and enjoyed exploring the beautiful scenes of
the coast. Keeping with the Wild West theme, Ken and Jan have
volunteered two summers at Custer State Park in South Dakota. Here they
experienced first hand the excitement of participating in the annual
buffalo round up.
During
the winter, Ken & Jan volunteer their time through a group called
Nomads. The past four years they have spent time at a homeless shelter
in Phoenix, AZ volunteering in whatever capacity is needed.
When at
home in Marion, Ken still actively volunteers in the Marion/Cedar Rapids
area by helping the HD Youth Center, Salvation Army and Marion
Presbyterian Church. Ken enjoys reading and states his favorite book is
entitled,
The Path
Between the Seas by
David McCullough. His favorite movie is Remember the Titans. Ken
relaxes on fishing trips with his buddies to Canada and the Mississippi
River. As his always caring self, Ken encourages everyone to pray for
peace in the Middle East.
Thanks Ken, for all you do to make yourself and others around you
flourish.
